What breaks a CV in an ATS
Text inside images
A parser reads characters, not pixels. A name or heading rendered as an image is simply absent from the stored record.
Multi-column layouts
Two columns often parse as interleaved lines: your job title ends up glued to a skill from the sidebar.
Tables holding the layout
Some parsers flatten tables row by row, scrambling the order of everything inside them.
Invented section names
«My journey» instead of «Experience» means the parser has nothing to map the block onto.
Dates in unusual formats
Write «2021–2024». Creative date formatting is a common cause of empty employment history.
Synonyms instead of the ad's words
If the ad says «Power BI», writing «business intelligence tooling» will not match the recruiter's search.

What is an ATS?
An applicant tracking system is the software an employer uses to receive and sort applications. It parses your CV into fields, stores it, and lets recruiters search across candidates. If the parser cannot read your file, a human may never see it.
Do systems really reject CVs automatically?
Outright auto-rejection is rarer than the internet claims. The real risk is quieter: a CV that parses badly ends up with empty fields and missing keywords, so it never surfaces when a recruiter searches. The fix is the same either way – a clean layout and the words from the ad.
